Honda motorcycles were developed by Soichiro Honda, yet his passion was vehicles. driving fast and racing were things he enjoyed, and this interest was complemented by his mechanical knowledge, picked up from working in an auto repair shop while he was in his teens. In 1953 Japan was having to deal with a depression, and, despite the fact that sales of motorcycles were on the up, the success of his company was in jeopardy. A small quantity of motorcycles had been selling, and since he just didn’t want to put people out of work, he kept the factory open. It turned out a good judgement, because the C100 Super Cub was launched in 1958, and it became the world’s most successful motorcycle. The transmission was capable of only three speeds, and the motor was 4-stroke, but it was versatile, cheap and anybody could use it.

Not only could new drivers operate it readily, but it became a way of commuting for women. The popularity of this bike catapulted Honda to the number one position by volume of motorcycle makers in 1959. This encouraged them to choose to start broadening around the world. They needed to set a precedence, so they elected to come to the United States. Acceptance by the American consumer would signify acceptance by the rest of the world. Honda was first on the market to the American public in June, 1959, in Los Angeles, and by 1960 you could buy a Honda from any of more than 75 stores.

Honda produced more trust for their merchandise with their community involvement, when they provided half of the funding for two organizations. These were the Motorcycle Industry Council, along with the Motorcycle Safety Council, both highly prized by enthusiasts of motorcycles. In the 70′s the Honda company kept developing new models that people just couldn’t resist, and they stayed number one in the industry. They were quickly regarded as the fastest bikes in the world, flowing from their winning of over 70 global races in 1973. The innovative GL1000 Gold Wing was launched in 1975, making touring bikes comfortable and stylish, and the concept was hurriedly emulated by Honda’s competition.

Innovative motorcycles, attractive to different cultures, have continued to be produced by Honda. In addition they try to hold a good reputation with the public by donating many motorcycles each year to causes that are deemed worthy. Bike safety keeps benefiting by Honda’s ongoing funding of training courses and dissemination of beneficial information for the promotion of motorcycling safety.
