Soichiro Honda’s obsession was motorized vehicles, but, paradoxically, he developed Honda motorcycles. driving fast plus racing were endeavors he enjoyed, and this obsession was complemented by his mechanical knowledge, picked up from working in an auto repair shop while he was in his teens. He owned both a Harley Davidson and an Indian, and he seemed to be quite experienced at motorcycle riding.
Although he already held a motor vehicle repair shop in 1928, it was only in 1948, when he was 41 years old, that Soichiro Honda started the Honda Motor Company. He paid a lot of attention to good quality, because he understood that to compete he needed well-designed products that were made well. In spite of motorcycle profits being on an ascending trend in 1953, the economic depression in Japan almost sank his company. Although an inadequate number of sales were being completed, he kept his factory going because he disliked the thought of taking work away from people. It turned out a good judgement, because the C100 Super Cub was released in 1958, and it became the world’s most successful motorcycle. The bike was versatile and affordable, within anybody’s reach, driven by a 4-stroke motor with a 3-speed transmission.
Not merely could new drivers operate it easily, but it became a way of commuting for women. The recognition of this bike catapulted Honda to the number one position by volume of motorcycle makers in 1959. At that point they decided to set their sights on the global market. They assumed that if they could first and foremost capture the United States market, it could start the ball rolling. They believed when their items were accepted by the American people, they would certainly win over the rest of the world as well. The first retail store promoting Honda motorcycles opened in June of 1959, in Los Angeles, and by 1960, successful dealerships, selling Honda’s, were more than 75.
By making presented half the financing for two important organizations, Honda showed their commitment to the community and won a huge amount of public trust for their company. These were the Motorcycle Industry Council, and the Motorcycle Safety Council, both highly valued by fans of motorcycles. Honda continued to create novel motorcycles which attract a cross-spectrum of cultures. Part of their excellent image stems from their continued practice of donating motorcycles to causes that they regard as worth supporting. Bike safety keeps benefiting by Honda’s sustained funding of training programs and dissemination of valuable information for the promotion of motorcycling safety. For several decades they’ve already proven their motorcycles to be one of the most reliable of those manufactured. They’ve become renowned rulers in the motorcycle industry, in no small part because of their determination to innovate irrespective of the circumstances.
