Developments In Technology Are Used Increasingly To Enhance The Accuracy Of Decision Making In Sport, But A Minority Of sports Are Bucking The Trend.

In the eyes of a follower of any sport, there will inevitably be areas of the game that will cause dissent. Clearly the biggest thing is the dubious decision made by those who are are supposed to be impartial and make sure of fair play. In the domain of sport there will always be genuine goals disallowed, penalties given when they should never have been, players given out when they were not, balls which land over the line but are called in and many more incorrect decisions.

This is a good reason why sport has more and more often started employing technology to give further confirmation of what the human eye is convinced it has seen taking place. Oddly, and for too many complex reasons explore here, football has stayed resistant to such a concept, but other sports have happily embraced the technology. People who enjoy cricket will be used to the third umpire who is keeping a watch on the match off the pitch and with a variety of technology to hand to confirm or deny shouts for LBW, or split second decisions when it is impossible to see if a player has been run out or not.

Tennis devotees are very familiar with Hawk-Eye (the same sort of technology employed in cricket) confirming if a ball has hit the ground inside or outside of the lines or not, and the sport has gone further still in actually letting players question a specified number of decisions in every game, which are then settled using the technology.

Hawk-Eye utilises a minimum of four high-speed video cameras in conjunction with computer software to accurately calculate and show the result of the ball’s movement. It’s incredibly clever stuff but even so the football authorities are reluctant to provide the technology to back up the three officials who take the hassle from half of those watching each time they stop play. The refrain of ‘Where’s your glasses, referee?’ (or something slightly less polite but with the same meaning) is still common in football grounds all around the country every Saturday. Although, as this is the 21st century, possibly these days the words should be ‘have you had your Laser eye surgery yet, referee?’!

Other sports use technology to identify unfair advantage, such as the sensors on sprinters and swimmers starting blocks which can identify a false start far more efficiently than the human eye. And American Football, of course, has made use of video playback for some considerable time to review the on-pitch officials’ judgements, though this does mean that there are a lot of interruptions to the play.

In a variety of ways, these various technological advances are also becoming a feature of the spectator’s experience too. television broadcasts of snooker now incorporates the Hawk-Eye system to show the viewer precisely what the player can see, and can demonstrate likely shots before the cue ball is struck to indicate to the viewer what options are available to the player.

As well as professional sports, technology provides some leisure pursuits with a safe means of playing what would really be stupidly dangerous games. Laser combat games do just that by allowing the participants to take aim at each other with their weapon’s Laser eye, causing no damage to the participants but enabling boys to be boys as far as real life war gaming is concerned. (I tried this game years ago on a ‘team building’ session with my fellow employees and considered it a very boring way to spend an afternoon!) Obviously, there are some small risks involved as dangerous firing of the gun at the face can cause Laser eye damage, but any reputable company laying on such events will monitor usage and make sure of the safety of all those joining in.

The laser gun is also finding its way into established sport as it has been announced that such guns will replace air pistols in the Modern Pentathlon at next year’s London Olympics. And in other areas of sport, lasers are also used most efficiently to treat health problems without the requirement for invasive surgery, and Laser eye surgery is used by sports participants like golfers to enhance their vision and therefore be able to see far more clearly what shot they are playing.

It appears that we’ve progressed hugely since the era when the 100 yard dash was timed by a man with a stopwatch and John McEnroe raised his voice and declared ‘you cannot be serious’. So get with it, football! Isn’t it about time you started to use technology too?
